“Things to Do in Yokohama: Fly Over Minato Mirai by Ropeway

Yokohama is one of Japan’s most vibrant port cities, only about 30 minutes from Tokyo.

Among its many attractions, the Yokohama Air Cabin stands out as the country’s first urban ropeway.

In just five minutes, you can glide above Minato Mirai, enjoying breathtaking views of the sea, skyscrapers, and the iconic Ferris wheel.

Whether you’re here for sightseeing, shopping, or a romantic night out, this short sky journey is an unforgettable way to experience Yokohama.

My Experience Riding the Yokohama Air Cabin

From Sakuragicho Station, it was surprisingly easy to find the ropeway terminal. The ticket machines were straightforward, and within minutes I had my boarding pass in hand.

As the cabin doors closed and we lifted off, the city slowly opened up beneath me. On one side, the sparkling waters of Yokohama Bay; on the other, the skyline of Minato Mirai with the Landmark Tower and Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris wheel.

The ride itself was only about five minutes, but it felt special—like floating above the city. I went in the evening, and the lights reflecting on the water made it even more magical.

One small tip: taking photos through the cabin window can be tricky because of the glass reflections, especially at night. If you want good shots, try holding the camera close to the glass or be prepared to enjoy the view with your eyes instead of through the lens.

What Makes It Special

he Yokohama Air Cabin isn’t just a convenient way to move between Sakuragicho and Minato Mirai—it’s also unique in several ways.

First, it is Japan’s first urban ropeway, opened in 2021. Unlike mountain cable cars, this one glides directly over the city, connecting major attractions in just five minutes.

Second, the views are unforgettable. From above, you can see the Landmark Tower, the Ferris wheel, and Yokohama Bay all at once. Riding at sunset or after dark is especially beautiful, with the city lights reflecting on the water.

Finally, it’s an experience for everyone—easy to access, family-friendly, and a romantic spot for couples. It’s not just transportation, but a short attraction in itself.
